1. History & Function

The Research Centre for Environmental Technology and Sustainable Development (CETASD) is established on the basis of the Centre for Environmental Chemistry (founded in 1997) according to decision No. 254/TCCB  of President of the Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU). It’s main functions are focusing on (1) environmental researches, (2) taking part in environmental training for university students;

(3) environmental services (organizing short training courses in the field of environmental science; technology transfer, etc).

2. Resource

The Centre has explored resources from its 65 staff (3 professors, 5 doctors and 14 Masters) and through the cooperation with other national and international institutions, eg. CEETIA-Hanoi Civil Engineering University, CEST – Hanoi University of Technology, faculty of Chemistry, Faculty of Environment , Faculty of Geography & Faculty of Biology (HUS); Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC); Chulabhorn Research Institute, Bangkok (Thailand); Shimadzu company; Osaka University (Japan), etc.

4. Activities

Scientific Research:

CETASD has been carrying out many research projects eg.  environmental pollution Monitoring &wastes treatment technologies (under the support of the Swiss Government); natural disasters, Global change; urban and peri-urban interface interactions and environmental planning for sustainable development.        

Supporting for educational, scientific research activities in internal and external Hanoi University of Science:

As a part of  HUS, the Centre has actively taken part in teaching and supervising research works in the field of environmental chemistry for university’s undergraduate and graduate students . Annually, about 20 students will carry out research works for their thesis at CETASD within 3-4 months. The Centre creates opportunities for young scientists, co-workers going to aboard for further education and training.

Scientific advisory and technology transfer.

Providing consultative, information services and technology transfer in the field of environmental science and technology. Technology transfer projects relating to designing and manufacturing low-cost, appropriate systems for treatment of different kind of industrial and domestic wastes from cement, pulp and paper, ceramic industries, etc

Training courses and workshops at the Centre.

Short-term training courses on environmental analyses are supplied at the Centre for participants from other research, training and governmental institutions from central to local level. Typical courses are: Detection of environmental pollutants and monitoring of health effects (with Chulahorn Research Institute); Application of instrumental analysis methods for controlling environment and food samples (Shimadzu company); “Management, use and assessment of environmental pollution of pesticides” (SDC), etc. Seminars: “The first joint seminar on environmental science and technology in the core university program between Osaka University and VNU Hanoi” (ISPS); “As Pollution: Current situation, its impact on public health and preventive solutions” (12/2000)

Environmental Laboratories. 

Environmental laboratories with modern equipments and analytical instruments (Chromatographic Instrumental Analysis, A&M Spectroscopic Instrumental Analysis, ; Electrochemistry Analysis instruments, etc) for environmental sampling, sample storing & preparing and analysis, which supplied by the Vietnam-Swiss Project and SHIMADZU company, are available at the Centre for  research, education and services.

Services of analyses at the Centre include:

• Determination of general environmental parameters of water, air and bio-organism samples collected on-field

• Determination of traces of heavy metals, and N- containing ions (NH4, NO3,NO2) in water, soil, and food samples

• Determination of organ chlorine, organ phosphorous and nitrogenous pesticide residues in water, soil, rice and bio-organism samples

• Determination of traces of Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), organ tin compounds, aldehydes and volatile organic compounds (VOCs)... in different environmental objects

• Quality testing of chemicals, composition of pharmaceutical products,...

Services on environmental engineering:

• Designing, producing and installing treatment systems for drinking water, swimming pool water and water used in industries

• Designing technologies for treatment of waste water from paper and pulp mills and brewery factories

 Other services:

• Consulting and implementing reports on environmental impact assessment (EIA)

• Opening short-term training courses on fundamental environment, especially on advanced analytical techniques applied in analyzing different environmental objects such as soil, water, air, pharmaceutical products, food stuff as well as petrochemical products... for specialized and authorized officers,

• Organizing scientific seminaries and workshops....
